Description

JA! Fantastic and well-laid-out apartment located in a beautiful 16th-century National Monument with a gross floor area of 73.3 m2. The property is spread over the second and attic floors of originally two buildings, which were fully renovated by Stadsherstel with new foundations in the late 1980s.

Thanks to the 6 large windows, there is a panoramic view from the living room over the waters of the Singel and Brouwersgracht, with its southwest orientation providing a spectacular sunset. Stromarkt is situated in the heart of Amsterdam, just a few minutes' walk from Central Station, close to all amenities yet peacefully located.

The building has a rich history. From 1644 to 1661, one of the most famous doctors of the 17th century, Dr. Nicolaes Tulp (1593-1674), was the owner. He served as mayor of Amsterdam four times and is best known for Rembrandt's painting "The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp." Hendrik Beerenburg, who became the owner of this property in 1724, is the inventor of the Beerenburg herbal mixture. Hendrik had the facade altered, adding the trademark "T WAPE of VENETIEN" above the door lintel. A bear in a fortress was placed atop the building, ornaments that still adorn the property today.

From your own 16th-century apartment, you can enjoy daily what makes Amsterdam so unique: the 17th-century canal houses across the way and the comings and goings of boats in the canals and through the Haarlemmersluis; a view that will never cease to captivate!

HISTORY
Historical building with a story: originally two adjacent buildings, numbers 9 and 11 on Stromarkt, owned by Jan Jansz van Leijden in 1553. Although no longer recognizable as twin buildings, the original unity is still visible inside with a shared timber construction. Over the years, the buildings have undergone various renovations, including replacing stepped gables with neck and bell gables in the 18th century and adding a curved cornice in Louis XIV style. The buildings have wooden facades providing access to basements and ground floor apartments, with a central door leading to the upper apartments.
